"Save File to" in Right Click Context Menu - Firefox

Whenever we find any File, Webpage, Image or Link of our interest we tend to save it to our machine. The simplest way to save them is right clicking the object and clicking Save Link/Image/Page As and specifying the folder where it needs to be saved.

Save File To extension for Firefox is a cool add-on which adds one more option to Right Click Context Menu which makes it even simpler to save the files to your machine.

Standard Firefox way to save files

Saving file after installing Save File To extension for Firefox

You get the folder options as soon as you hit Save Link To which saves you time specifying the folder each time you want to save the file.

By default Desktop and My Documents are the 2 folders added in the list. You can configure the add-on to add more folders to it.

The folders can be different for each type of object. For eg. I would like to save Files I download in D:\Downloads folder so I will add it under Page Menu, whereas Images on C:\Images under Images menu.

Securely deliver files upto 4GB

Everyone needs to share personal files with family, friends or business files with colleagues which can be personal and need to be shared securely. The options available are using FTP clients, Zip Utilities, Encryption programs to encrypt if the data is sensitive and using download managers etc.

Its cumbersome to go through all this and send the files. Moreover many email clients do not allow you to send files as attachments over 10MB.

Civil Netizen is a free application for personal and professional use which not only sends large files but also makes sure that your files are secure by encrypting them using 128-bit AES encryption.

When to use Civil Netizen instead of e-mail attachments
Choose Civil Netizen when your files are either

Seriously Big
4GBCivil Netizen can handle files and folders up to 4GB in total size. It also preserves the folder structure you have designed.

Seriously Sensitive
AES All file transfer traffic is secured end-to-end between senders and recipients using 128-bit AES encryption.

Seriously Important
< !
>The built-in download manager resumes any interrupted transfers and keeps trying until your files are delivered.

How to send files using Civil Netizen
The first step to send a file is create a parcel. Just drag and drop the files to be sent into a parcel. Civil Netizen compresses your files and retains the folder structure.

Once the parcel is created you only need to email or IM the pick up slip to the recipient. Pick up slip is usually 8 lines of text.

The recipient can copy the pickup slip text or use the pickup slip to download the file directly from your computer

Once the download is complete Civil Netizen unpacks the parcel to the specified folder

You can even Track the status of the parcels using Track Status

To conclude Civil Netizen is a nice application to share files securely using your network.

Google Similar Pages

Ealier I had written about finding sites similar to the one you are browsing using Firefox add-of named Similar Sites.

It happens that we enjoy the site and are interested in more similar pages  on the web. The first thing we do is Google it but not always lucky with the query to get the perfect results. Google Similar Sites extension for Google Chrome helps you here. Using Google Similar Sites you can preview and explore the sites which are similar to the one you are browsing.

How to use Google Similar Sites
  • Open up Google Chrome and Download and install Google Similar Sites extension
  • Once you have installed Google Similar Sites you will see an icon for the same next to the Address Bar in Google Chrome.
  • Start browsing the site you are interested in and click the Google Similar Sites button to get recommendations from Google on similar sites. For testing lets use www.addictinggames.com a site dedicated for online flash games.
Google Similar Sites is still in its beta. For some sites which are new to the internet you might get result "No similar Sites found".

To conclude Google Similar Sites is a great extension if you want recommendations on sites similar to your interests.

Multi-User login in Windows 7/Vista/XP using Remote Desktop

Multi user login commonly know as Concurrent sessions gives you the advantage to allow multiple users to login to the same computer using a remote computer without disturbing other users using it.

Concurrent sessions is a feature in server editions of Windows that lets more than one user to log on remotely and use the server at the same time. By default in Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP when you connect to a computer using Remote Desktop it forces the person physically using the machine to loose his session.

If you have concurrent session enabled on your Windows machine everyone can access the machine using Remote Desktop without hampering other users work.

How to enable Concurrent Sessions on Windows machine
1. Download the Universal Termsrv.dll Patch by DeepXW and unzip it.

2. I would prefer you manually back up Termsrv.dll from C:\Windows\System32 folder

3. Right click and Run as Administrator the appropriate patcher exe depending on your OS version
    For 32bit (x86) select UniversalTermsrvPatch-x86.exe
    For 64bit (x64) select UniversalTermsrvPatch-x64.exe

4. Click the patch button to patch the DLL and click OK on the success window

5. You would have to restart your machine for changes to take effect

I have personally tested this and it works all fine without affecting your Windows OS or any other application. Everything works fine and multiple users are able to access the machine using Remote Desktop.

Get Older versions of your favorite softwares

Its a best practice to upgrade all your applications to their latest versions, but sometimes you might not like the newer version of an application and prefer to revert back to the older version. There can be many reasons for reverting back to the older version like newer version failing to run properly on your machine, spyware, bugs, removal of feature you like.

In such case, if you want to revert back to the previous version you can use http://www.old-versions.net to search the older version. This website contains version of most commonly used software's and are neatly categorized. They have almost all the versions of a particular software. You can even contribute an application version with old-versions.net.

Quite useful when new version messes up with you.

Unlock locked files in Windows 7 using LockHunter an alternative for Unlocker

I was having hard time with files being locked in Windows 7 as Unlocker does not work with Windows 7. My colleague Shwet came to my rescue showing me an alternative to Unlocker named LockHunter. Thanks Shwet :D. I thought sharing this will help others who are stuck with the same problem.

Most of us know what Unlocker is and what it does. In case you don't know it, Unlocker is a software which rescues you from annoying error messages given by Windows, like:
Cannot delete file: Access is denied.
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use or the file is in use by another program or user.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

The above error messages happens when you try to delete, move or rename a file which is being used by some other process running on your machine. Unlocker helps you unlock the processes which use the file to let you continue with your work.
Unfortunately Unlocker does not work on Windows 7. LockHunter is a cool alternative for Unlocker if you work on a Windows 7 PC. LockHunter is a free to use software for personal purposes.

Key Features of LockHunter
  • Shows processes locking a file or folder
  • Allows to unlock, delete, copy or rename a locked file
  • Allows to kill locking process
  • Allows to remove locking processes from hard drive
  • Integrates in to Explorer menu
  • It deletes files into the recycle bin, so you may restore them if deleted by mistake
  • Supports both 32 and 64bit Windows
How to use LockHunter
Download LockHunter 32-bit or 64 bit depending on your machines configuration and install it. You can use LockHunter to unlock a file or folder from the Main Window or from the Explorer's context menu.
To unlock a file from using LockHunter Main Window, specify the file you want to unlock and click the button next to the text box.
After selecting the file to be unlocked the window shows you the processes locking the file. You can choose Unlock It! or Delete It! depending on your requirement.

To unlock the file from Windows Explorer using right click context menu, simply right click the file you want to unlock and click "What is locking this file?"
The main window of LockHunter would be opened displaying the processes locking the file for you to select an action.

LockHunter in all is a nice application and can be used as an alternative to Unlocker not only for Windows 7 but also for other Windows versions.

Download online videos from best video sites using Firefox

Earlier I had written about downloading YouTube videos using YouDown. YouDown is a great standalone application allowing you to download videos from YouTube giving you the option to select the quality of video.

At times the video we are looking to download is not uploaded at YouTube and downloading them from any other site becomes a question. Well, if you use Firefox then Keep Tube is the perfect add-on to help you out with this. Keep Tube lets you Download Youtube Videos (HD/HQ MP4, FLV, 3GP) Dailymotion (HQ MP4, FLV), Magavideo (HD/HQ FLV) Google (HQ MP4, FLV), Vimeo (HQ MP4) Break (HQ MP4, FLV), Veoh (HQ MP4, FLV), Metacafe, Spike, Myspace, Facebook, Current, Redtube and more!

Keep Tube smartly adds a "Download" link below or next to the video on all the supported sites. Just click the Download link and the video gets downloaded for you.

Once you click the download link on the video you want to download it gives you different downloading options which would affect the video quality for download.

Change Firefox Persona's periodically

As we all know Persona's are free and easy to install Firefox skins. Persona's can be changed easily  to suit your mood unlike previous Firefox skins. Currently there are 30,000+ persona's available for download, so you have got wide variety too. Out of all this 30,000+ persona's you would definitely like a bunch of persona's.

Personas Rotator is a free add on for Firefox which changes the persona's periodically for you. Personas Rotator will automatically rotate the Personas skins you have. If you have an account created on GetPersonas.com and have set some favorites, the add-on will use your GetPersona's favorites to change the persona's for your Firefox. If you do not have an account for GetPersonas.com then it will randomly pick up a persona and set it as your Firefox skin.

You can customize Persona's Rotator to set the location from where the persona's should be rotated. You can set the option as a specific Category, your GetPersonas.com's favorites or All Categories.

This add-on is a companion for Personas. Therefore you need to first install the Personas  add-on and then Personas Rotator add-on.

What happened in your Birth Year

Do you really care to know what happened the year you were born. Well I dont, because I was born which is enough for me to know. But if you really care about it just try out http://whathappenedinmybirthyear.com/
The site is simple to use and its only your birth year which you need to provide and it returns you back the information of various types.
I tried 2012 to check if the world is ending but it said no information available. LOLzzz...

Note: It is still under development and in some cases it might not be able to provide the information.

This is what it returned me for my Birth year 1984.

In 1984, the world was a different place.
There was no Google yet. Or Yahoo.
In 1984, the year of your birth, the top selling movie was Ghostbusters. People buying the popcorn in the cinema lobby had glazing eyes when looking at the poster.
Remember, that was before there were DVDs. People were indeed watching movies in the cinema, and not downloading them online. Imagine the packed seats, the laughter, the excitement, the novelty. And mostly all of that without 3D computer effects.
Do you know who won the Oscars that year? The academy award for the best movie went to Amadeus. The Oscar for best foreign movie that year went to Dangerous Moves. The top actor was F. Murray Abraham for his role as Antonio Salieri in Amadeus. The top actress was Sally Field for her role as Edna Spalding in Places in the Heart. The best director? Milos Forman for Amadeus.
In the year 1984, the time when you arrived on this planet, books were still popularly read on paper, not on digital devices. Trees were felled to get the word out. The number one US bestseller of the time was The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. Oh, that's many years ago. Have you read that book? Have you heard of it? Look at the cover!
In 1984... US Bell System is broken up. Brunei becomes a fully independent state. The Apple Macintosh is introduced. Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen gets in a serious car accident, severing his left arm. Medicare comes into effect in Australia. NASA crashes a remote controlled Boeing 720 in a Controlled Impact Demonstration. The Sandinista Front wins the Nicaraguan general elections. The popular Transformers toy and media franchise debuts. Joe Kittinger becomes the first person to cross the Atlantic, solo, in a hot air balloon. Western Australia becomes the last Australian state to abolish capital punishment. Michael Jackson won a record eight Grammy Awards. Iran accuses Iraq of using chemical weapons; the United Nations condemns their use on March 30. Advance Australia Fair is proclaimed as Australia's national anthem, and green and gold as the national colours. The Louisiana World's Fair opens. Beverly Lynn Burns becomes the first woman Boeing 747 captain in the world. The Space Shuttle Discovery takes off on its maiden voyage. The United Kingdom and the People's Republic of China sign the initial agreement to return Hong Kong to China in 1997. The Detroit Tigers defeat the San Diego Padres to win in 5 games. The British Telecom is privatised. A Soviet cruise missile plunges into Inarinjärvi lake in Finnish Lapland. The video game of the day was Paperboy.
That was the world you were born into. Since then, you and others have changed it.
The Nobel prize for Literature that year went to Jaroslav Seifert. The Nobel Peace prize went to Desmond Mpilo Tutu. The Nobel prize for physics went to Carlo Rubbia and Simon van der Meer from Italy and Netherlands for their decisive contributions to the large project, which led to the discovery of the field particles W and Z, communicators of weak interaction. The sensation this created was big. But it didn't stop the planets from spinning, on and on, year by year. Years in which you would grow bigger, older, smarter, and, if you were lucky, sometimes wiser. Years in which you also lost some things. Possessions got misplaced. Memories faded. Friends parted ways. The best friends, you tried to hold on. This is what counts in life, isn't it?
The 1980s were indeed a special decade. The Soviet-Afghan war goes on. Eastern Europe sees the collapse of communism. Policies like Perestroika and Glasnost in the Soviet Union lead to a wave of reforms. Protests are crushed down on Tiananmen Square in China. Ethiopa witnesses widespread famine. Nicolae Ceausescu is overthrown. The AIDS pandemic begins. The role of women in the workplace increased greatly. MTV is launched in the US. There is opposition against Apartheid in South Africa as well as worldwide. Heavy Metal and Hard Rock bands are extremely popular. The rise of Techno music begins. Originally primarily played on campus radio stations, College Rock enters the scene with bands like the Pixies, REM and Sonic Youth. The Hip Hop scene continues to evolve. Teletext is introduced. Gay rights become more widely accepted in the world. Opposition to nuclear power plants grows. The A-Team and Seinfeld are popular on TV. US basketball player Michael Jordan bursts on the scene. Super Mario Bros, Zelda's Link, and Pac-Man gain fame in video games. People wear leggings, shoulder pads and Ray-Ban sunglasses.
Do you know what was on the cover of Life that year?
Do you remember the movie that was all the rage when you were 15? American Beauty. Do you still remember the songs playing on the radio when you were 15? Maybe it was Heartbreaker by Mariah Carey featuring Jay-Z. Were you in love? Who were you in love with, do you remember?
In 1984, 15 years earlier, a long time ago, the year when you were born, the song Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go by Wham topped the US charts. Do you know the lyrics? Do you know the tune? Sing along.
You put the boom boom into my heart,
You send my soul sky high when your lovin' starts.
Jitterbug into my brain,
Goes bang bang bang till my feet do the same.
...
There's a kid outside, shouting, playing. It doesn't care about time. It doesn't know about time. It shouts and it plays and thinks time is forever. You were once that kid.
When you were 9, the movie Last Action Hero was playing. When you were 8, there was Honey, I Blew Up the Kid. When you were 7, there was a Disney movie out called Aladdin. Does this ring a bell?
6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... it's 1984. There's TV noise coming from the second floor. Someone turned up the volume way too high. The sun is burning from above. These were different times. The show playing on TV is Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer. The sun goes down. Someone switches channels. There's Kate and Allie on now. That's the world you were born in.
Progress, year after year. Do you wonder where the world is heading towards? The technology available today would have blown your mind in 1984. Do you know what was invented in the year you were born? The Digital Synthesizer. The Portable CD Player. Phase Distortion Synthesis.
1984
Knockin' on your door
Will you let it come?
Will you let it run your life?
...
That's from the song 1984 by Spirit.
In 1984, a new character entered the world of comic books: Donatello from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Bang! Boom! But that's just fiction, right? In the real world, in 1984, Ashlee Simpson was born. And Avril Lavigne. Chiaki Kuriyama, too. And you, of course. Everyone an individual. Everyone special. Everyone taking a different path through life.
It's 2010.
The world is a different place.
What path have you taken?

Google Buzz - Hide whom you follow and your followers from others

By default Google Buzz shows your friends whom you follow and who follow you on Buzz. You may not want your friends to know your followers and whom you follow. To hide your followers and people you follow from your friends you need to change a setting under your Google Profile.

Steps to hide followers from friends
  • Login to your Google Account
  • Open your Google profile by tying http://google.com/profiles/me in the Address bar
  • Click on Edit Profile link in the top right side of the screen
  •  Uncheck the checkbox which says "Display the list of people I'm following and people following me" and scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes.
Once you are done with this none of your friends would be able to see the links about whom you follow and your followers. To be assured about this you can check your profile page after saving the changes which displays those links but mentions they are only visible to you.

Google Buzz Review

Google Buzz has launched recently and has got a overwhelming response. Google made a smart move by integrating Buzz within Gmail to compete Facebook. By integrating it into Gmail, Google made sure that people will use Buzz as they do check their emails for sure.  This is something they lacked with their highly hyped product Wave.

Google's previous attempts into Social Networking have been Orkut which went well in some countries but could not compete the leader Facebook and headed downwards. Wave was over hyped and articles were spread all over internet with tips and tricks. Invites were being sold online to get hands on Google Wave. It lasted for a few weeks and died out of the news.

Now it's Google Buzz with some smarter moves from Google. Buzz has some advantages as well as disadvantages. Let's check things one by one.

No Setup needed
As soon as Google Buzz gets enabled for your Gmail account you automatically start following the people whom you chat and email the most. Similarly those people start following you.
Good: You don't need to start from scratch. Google does something for you so that you can start using it easily.
Bad: Why on earth would one want to follow everyone he email's or chat's the most? Isn't there thing called privacy? By doing this Google shares the information about my contacts,  share details about  whom I chat or email to my other followers till I don't setup my account properly.

Click here to read how to hide whom you follow and your followers from others.

Inbox integration
Whenever a new comment is posted to on your post or anyone else's post where you have commented they are sent right in your Inbox.
Good: Great to be updated with the conversation and keep the conversation moving.
Bad: If you comment on a Post with lots of comments your Inbox gets flooded with emails.

Click to read How to block Buzz Notifications.

Share publicly or privately
Buzz gives you an option to share your ideas with the entire world on a selected few people when posting.  Nice to have feature.

Connect sites you already use
You can connect to the sites you are already using to import the stuff. Sites supported are Twitter, Picasa, Flickr, Blogger and Google Reader.
Good: Allows importing your stuff, feeds etc.
Bad: Could not see Facebook integration. People use FB heavily. Tried setting up Twitter and god knows why but Google never asked me for login details for my Twitter account.

Change Windows 7 Start Button

A 12 year young TWC forum member Kishan Bagaria has developed a tiny and user friendly utility neatly named as "Windows 7 Start Button Changer" using which one can change the Start Menu Button's Image in Windows 7.

Windows 7 was very refreshing at its launch. But as time passes by human gets bored of things we use everyday and need them changed. Similarly if you are bored of the same Windows 7 Start Button icon use Windows 7 Start Button Changer to get a new feel.

Steps to change Start Button
  • Download Windows 7 Start Button Changer
  • Extract the contents of the Zip file to a location on your hard drive
  • Prefer creating a System Restore point so that you can revert back to original settings incase something goes wrong. I never had to revert back but precaution is better. Run "Windows 7 Start Button Changer.exe" from the location you unzipped the downloaded file
  •  The downloaded Zip file contains 10 sample ORB's. Click the Windows logo next to "Select & Change Start Button"
  • Select the image file you like and click Open and the button gets changed
  • If you want to again change the button image prefer restoring to original explorer settings and then performing the above steps to get a new image

Well if you need more Windows 7 start button images you can Google for Windows 7 Start ORB and download them.

Note: The program has been tested on Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit and 64 bit editions.
If the program does not start for you try right clicking the exe file and selecting "Run as Administrator".
If in x64 version, you receive an ‘unhandled exception’ error, please click on Continue or try running it again ‘As an Admin’.

    Control Remote Computer using Tweeter

Twitter till date was an application to keep your status updated. TweetMyPC has changed what you can do using Tweeter. TweetMyPC is an application using which you can Shutdown, Restart, Log off and do many more things with a Remote PC.
You need a Tweeter account obviously for using TweetMyPC. Provide your Tweeter login credentials to TweetMyPC. Preferably create a new Tweeter account for TweetMyPC. Make sure your password for Tweeter account is not shared and is kept safe as anyone can misuse it. You obviously need internet connection on your Remote Machine. Just install TweetMyPC on the Remote Machine, provide it the tweeter login credentials and keep the machine running.
Now you can tweet the Tweeter account from any machine across the globe with keywords like "shutdown" to shutdown the remote machine. It is that simple.
TweetMyPC checks for status updates every minute and runs most of the time in the Windows system tray.

    Keywords for using TweetMyPC
    1. Commands are not case sensitive : Shutdown and shutdown does the same job ;-)
    2. Replies : TweetMyPC will reply to you after a command is executed. Replies will be in the form of Tweets. Below is a screenshot of how the reply will look for “lock” commandlock

    13. download : Want to download an intresting video but you are on the move? don’t worry just tweet download followed by the download url and TweetMyPC will download it for you and it will be ready when you return back. Note: Twitter automatically converts long urls into short one using bit.ly. TweetMyPC can download files only if the url is in the short form. Please use bit.ly to shorten your url before posting.
