Google Wave Notifier

Google Wave has had a great hype these days. Many people are having access to Google Wave accounts now as Google has started distributing the invitations to try out Wave. Google Wave has all good features but I feel it is not that useful unless you have some tool which notifies you when you get a new Wave.

Google Wave Notifier does this for you. It is a neat application, low on resources which informs you whenever you receive a new wave. It is simple to use and configure as it just needs you Google Wave account details to login.

It gives you options to select the browser in which it should open your new waves.
Plays sound when a new Wave is received.
Setup Proxy server.

How a website would look on different resolutions

Google Labs has launched yet another application to ease our life. This time it has come up with Browser Size using which one can get an idea about his websites usability. It is a visualization of browser window sizes for people who visit Google. For example, the "90%" contour means that 90% of people visiting Google have their browser window open to at least this size or larger.

This is useful for ensuring that important parts of a page's user interface are visible by a wide audience. Once you land up on the home page an example page opens. On the example page that you see when you first visit this site, there is a "donate now" button which falls within the 80% contour, meaning that 20% of users cannot see this button when they first visit the page. 20% is a significant number; knowing this fact would encourage the designer to move the button much higher in the page so it can be seen without scrolling.

To view your own Web site with this same visualization overlaid on it, simply type its URL into the "Enter URL here" textbox at the top of the window and click Go.

Adobe Reader Latest Security Hole

According to the report from ZDNet (http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=5119&tag=nl.e589) Adobe has confirmed a security hole in Adobe PDF Reader. According the report his you need to disable the Javascript in Adobe Reader to keep your machine safe from vulnerabilities. To disable Javascript in Adobe Reader follow the steps below:

  • Open Adobe Reader
  • Go To Edit -> Preferences
  • In Preferences window select JavaScript in the Categories on the left side
  • Uncheck "Enable Acrobat JavaScript" and click Ok

A better solution would be switching to FoxIt Reader which is light weight PDF Viewer.

Connect website using multiple logins in Firefox

If incase you have multiple logins for a single website and you need to access both within single instance Firefox browser then Multifox is an extension you are looking for. For example if you have 2 Gmail accounts then you need to log off from 1 of the accounts to access the other account within same Firefox instance. Multifox makes it possible to access all your Gmail accounts at once within the same instance without interfering the other account.

Multifox adds commands to Firefox's context menu to start a New Identity Window.

Each Multifox window is flagged with a number indicating the identity profile. Logins made in windows with different numbers are isolated.
If you need to access 5 Gmail accounts you will need 5 windows with different identity profiles.

Multifox also prevents the identity profile of each window when Firefox restores the sessions

Google Toolbar 6.4 Released for Firefox and IE

Google released its new version of Google Toolbar 6.4 for IE and Firefox.

The new toolbar as expected adds some cool new features like:

Share Web Pages
It is a feature that lets you share web pages using social networking sites, mail services, bookmarking services and other sites. You can select your favorite services from the settings page.
Google URL Shortener
If you share links using Twitter, you'll notice a new URL shortening service: goo.gl which shortens the URL's. Read more about Google URL Shortener.

Geolocation
Another new Google Toolbar feature implements W3C's geolocation API
, which allows web pages to access detailed information about the locations of their visitors. This feature is already available in Firefox 3.5 so Google only added it to the IE version of Google Toolbar.

Google URL Shortener

Google URL Shortener at goo.gl is a service that takes long URLs and squeezes them into fewer characters to make a link that is easier to share, tweet, or email to friends. The core goals of this service are: stability, security and speed."

  • Stability – ensuring that the service has very good uptime
  • Security – protecting users from malware and phishing pages
  • Speed – fast resolution of short URLs
The service is only used by Google Toolbar and FeedBurner, so there's no web interface or API for goo.gl for now.

Google Video adds Cartoons and Slideshows Search

Google has added new feature to its video search to restrict the search results to cartoons and slideshows. To restrict the search you need to search for the content you are looking for, click "Show Options" and select "Cartoons" or Slideshows" from the options in the left panel.
Google claims that it uses video recognition technology to classify the videos and give you better search results. Not sure if this is that useful feature but Google ended up ruining a great feature "TV view" using which you could play the videos without opening a new page. YouTube videos are no longer played in the embedded player while the other videos are played on the search results page only if you click on "Play Video".

Windows Aero v/s Ubuntu Beryl

Windows Aero has been quite popular since it was launched in Windows Vista. Even Windows 7 uses Windows Aero and has improved greatly. To compete Linux community has come up with Beryl for Ubuntu. Beryl has almost all features of Aero like Windows transparency, Alt Tab switcher etc. Beryl contains additional features like Cubical view of windows, animated effects for minimizing and maximizing windows, burn effect when closing the windows.

Windows Aero gives Flip 3D feature using which you can see all windows in 3D environment. Taskbar preview of applications when you hover your mouse over it.

Beryl offers you more features than Aero like giving blur effects to background windows, zoom effects, windows decorators, etc.

Windows Aero comes with Windows Vista and Windows 7 which are paid products where as Linux comes for free so does Beryl.

Beryl is definitely better than Aero but the market share is more with Windows than Linux. For existing Windows users it would be difficult to get the advantages of additional features of Beryl. But for new learners it would be easy if they start learning Linux :)

Google launches 300 extensions for Google Chrome Browser

Google held an event in Googleplex in Mountain View to showcase the new Chrome extensions. Google Chrome extensions list has already reached around 500 now. Google also showcased how easy it is to build a Google Chrome extension as two of its developers developed a Chrome extension from scratch during the presentation in not more than 5 mins. The extension build was not a basic but displayed a Gmail message window with the current page's link.

This is quickly attracting users and the developers. Chrome extensions are so easy to build because they are nothing else but a webpage which almost every developer is familiar with.

Currently Chrome offers pretty nice extensions like:

DotSpots
Connect blog posts, links, photos, videos and docs to any text on the web or into your social stream for all to see.

Shareaholic for Google Chrome
Share, save, or email the page you're visiting using services like Twitter, Facebook, Gmail, Google Reader and over 80 more.

StumbleUpon
Discover the best of the web!

Google Translate
This extension translates entire webpages into a language of your choice with one click. By the Google Translate team.

Faster Internet Browsing with Google Public DNS

While looking for a Internet Connection we always tend to search for a ISP who provides faster Internet connection. No matter whatever ISP you choose you might not get the fastest browsing experience using your ISP's default DNS settings. DNS (Domain Name System) translates an IP address to an easy to remember hostname. There are other services like OpenDNS that are faster than your ISP and offer cool features.Google has recently launched a free public DNS service using which you get the following advantages over your ISP's default DNS:

  • Performance. Many DNS service providers are not sufficiently provisioned to be able to support high-volume input/output and caching, and adequately balance load among their servers. In addition to load-balancing user traffic to ensure shared caching, Google Public DNS implements "smart" caching to increase the speed of responses. Google Public DNS independently resolves domain names and keeps the resolutions in the cache until their time-to-live (TTL) expires, at which point they are automatically refreshed. The cycle of caching and refreshing is performed offline, asynchronously with user requests, so that responses are almost always available directly from cache. For more information, see the page on performance benefits.
  • Security. DNS is vulnerable to various kinds of spoofing attacks that can "poison" a nameserver's cache and route its users to malicious sites. The prevalence of DNS exploits means that providers have to frequently apply server updates and patches. In addition, open DNS resolvers are vulnerable to being used to launch denial-of-service (DoS) attacks on other systems. To defend against such attacks, Google has implemented several recommended solutions to help guarantee the authenticity of the responses it receives from other nameservers, and to ensure our servers are not used for launching DoS attacks. These include adding entropy to requests, rate-limiting client traffic, and more. For more information, see the page on security benefits.
  • Correct results. Google Public DNS does its best to return the right answer to every query every time, in accordance with the DNS standards. Sometimes, in the case of a query for a mistyped or non-existent domain name, the right answer means no answer, or an error message stating the domain name could not be resolved. Google Public DNS never blocks, filters, or redirects users, unlike some open resolvers and ISPs.
Add Google DNS to your Windows machine
To add Google DNS to your Windows machine, go to Control Panel -> Network Connections

Now right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties.

Now in Local Area Connection Properties window select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and hit the Properties button. Incase you have TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6 make sure you select TCP/IPv4.

Now the Internet Protocol TCP/IP Properties window will come up. Before you change your DNS settings to use Google Public DNS, be sure to write down the current server addresses or settings on a piece of paper. It is very important that you keep these numbers for backup purposes, in case you need to revert to them at any time

Select Use the following DNS server addresses and type in the following for Preferred and Alternate DNS server:
Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4
According to Google you can interchange the Primary and secondary address, but don’t use the same number for both.

Click OK once you make the DNS changes and close all the remaining windows. You might need to restart your system for the DNS changes to take effect. Once you are done restarting the system you can go through the websites to test if the settings are working properly. The websites should display properly. Alternately you can test this by typing the IP address of the website directly in the address bar and check if it is resolved correctly.

Google Redesigned - Firefox Extension

Google has come up with themes for Gmail, Google Reader and rest of its services, but the themes available are not that good. Google Redesigned is a Mozilla Firefox extension designed by Globex Designs that aims to fully redesign the look and feel of popular Google services. This is achieved with Cascading StyleSheet (CSS) files which are loaded on the client's browser. The extension simplifies the use of these styles by providing auto-updates, easy management and notifications of changes. You can also download and use the styles individually by going to their respective pages.

Here's how Gmail Services look in Firefox after installing this extension

Windows 7 - Delete File/Folder Confirmation Window

Deleting files from your system is one of the common activity. Whenever we delete any file or folder Windows pops up a confirmation window which is good as it gives you 1 chance to think about deletion but sometimes it is very annoying.

In Windows 7 you can do the following with the Delete Confirmation Window:
  • Turn On/Off Delete Confirmation Window
  • Prevent Users from Turning Off Delete Confirmation Window
Lets take a look on how to achieve this.

Turn On/Off Delete Confirmation Window
By default Delete Confirmation Window is always enabled in Windows 7. To turn off Delete Confirmation Window simply right click Recycle Bin and Click Properties.

In Recycle Bin Properties Window uncheck "Display Delete Confirmation Dialog".

That's it. Now when you delete any file/folder from your system Windows 7 will not ask you for a Confirmation message.

Prevent Users from Turning Off Delete Confirmation Window
It is good that the Admin has the capability to disable the Confirmation Window but in some cases Admin would want to make sure that the Window is always displayed and no other user can turn off the delete confirmation window. A setting can be made in Local Group Policy Editor to make sure that no one can turn off the Delete Confirmation Window.
  • Start gpedit.msc from Start -> Search Box or Start -> Run
  • Expand the folders  User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Windows Explorer
  • Double Click or Right click and select Edit for Setting "Display confirmation dialog when deleting files"

  • Select Enabled and Click OK.

Once this is done go back to Recycle Bin properties and you will see that the Display Delete confirmation dialog checkbox is selected and grayed out.

Help Improve Firefox User Experience

Are you a Firefox fan? If yes, why not help Mozilla improve Firefox more. Firefox developers are always adding new features and changing the existing functionality. Most of the times they try to do their best to meet the requirements, but many times they are short of data to know in which direction they need to move next. Being a developer myself I know how important data is to meet the users expectations.

Why not help Mozilla by providing the data like how we interact with Firefox by going through a series of tests? Mozilla Corp. has come up with an add-on for Firefox Test Pilot 0.4 using which you can help them improve Firefox.
You might have questions by now like: Do I need to be a Geek? What exactly do you need to do? What kinds tests? What kind of Data would be sent to Mozilla? What about Privacy?
Well, there is an answer for all these questions. Lets take a look at them 1 by 1.

Do I need to be a Geek?
No. The goal for this platform is to encourage everyone from all skill levels to improve the Web experience by conducting and participating in these tests.

What exactly do I need to do?

  • Install the Test Pilot add-on for Firefox
  • Try out the cool new features and user interface ideas before anyone else does
  • You will receive notifications on upcoming and finished tests
  • You can leave the platform if you wish to quit
  • If the test requires you to install a new feature or product, the platform will ask for your permission
What kinds tests?
This can be better explained with an example. Firefox keeps studying the user behavior with its browser to make it more user friendly. For such studies it needs the data about how users interact with the browser. Currently a survey is under schedule to understand what users typically do next after opening or closing a tab (Tab Open/Close). You don't have to do anything except use the Web normally. When you interact with tabs, Test Pilot will record what you do (open/close/switch etc) and when you do it (timestamp). Mozilla will then analyze this data to detect patterns that will help them build a better browser.

What kind of Data would be sent to Mozilla?
In the example of Tab Open/Close the data sent to Mozilla would be in CSV (comma-separated value) format. The first line of the file contains the column names. A chunk of sample data might look like this:

user, event_code, tab_position, tab_window, ui_method, tab_site_hash, num_tabs, timestamp
   1, 6, 3, 1, 0, 1, 4, 1252974367669
   1, 5, 0, 1, 1, 0, 4, 1252974422507
   1, 10,0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1252974427743
   1, 9, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 1253668079410
   1, 6, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 1253668079792
   1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 0, 2, 1253668084072
   1, 5, 1, 1, 2, 0, 2, 1253668084102
   1, 1, 2, 1, 2, 0, 3, 1253668084427
   1, 5, 2, 1, 2, 0, 3, 1253668084471
   1, 1, 3, 1, 2, 0, 4, 1253668084531

What about Privacy?
  • The websites (URLs) that you visit will never be recorded.
  • At the end of the test, you will be able to choose if you want to submit your test data or not.
  • All test data you submit will be anonymized and will not be personally identifiable.
So, buckle up and get ready for your first flight! Download Test Pilot 0.4
