Sync Firefox between computers using Weave

Mozilla launched its official synchronization tool Weave 1.0. Weave is a free browser add-on that can sync bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history and open browser tabs between different computers that run Firefox. Weave also runs on Mozilla's mobile browser for the Nokia N900.

Obviously Weave is not the only solution for syncing bookmarks as Xmarks is the most popular service for the cause. Xmarks syncs bookmarks between different browsers whereas Weave only syncs Firefox bookmarks. Weave is capable of syncing bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history as well as opened browser tabs.

That said if opened tabs can be shared imagine you working on a computer with some tabs open and you leave it for some reason and pick up your phone and find the same tabs on your Mobile Firefox. Now that's something amazing.

Syncing add-ons and preferences of your Firefox is one amazing feature too. You set it up on one machine, create another installation on another machine and you regain all your customizations and add-ons. Life made easy!!!

Getting Started
  • Make sure you are running Firefox 3.5 and higher.
  • Download and install Weave for Firefox.
  • Open Weave Preferences from Tools --> Weave --> Preferences
To use Weave, you have to register for an account with Mozilla. The plugin will automatically prompt you to create this account after the installation. Advanced users who are worried about their privacy can also use their own servers as a repository for their data. It's worth noting that all of the data you transfer to Mozilla's servers is encrypted.
